Events

The APPG on Arts, Health and Wellbeing has delivered a programme of round tables and other meetings in 2014-16. A summary and links to documents are below. These meetings will inform an Inquiry into Arts, Health and Wellbeing. You can find out more about the Inquiry here.

On 2nd July 2014 there was a meeting about The Care Act: How the Arts and Culture can contribute to improving the quality of care following the Francis Inquiry. The panel of speakers were: Sir Robert Francis QC, Emma Storm, winner of the Hippocrates Prize, and Nikki Crane and Suzy Willson, talking about arts based learning in the King’s Health Partnership. On 5th November 2014 there was a round table on The Care Act: Commissioning Arts and Culture for Wellbeing with a particular focus on Local Authority and Public Health commissioning. The minutes can be downloaded here. It was a joint event with the APPG on Wellbeing Economics and built on the recent report Wellbeing in Four Policy Areas. On 11th February 2015 the APPG co-hosted with the APPGs on Wellbeing Economics and Mindfulness, an event on Gross National Happiness. The guest speaker was Dr Saamdu Chetri, Executive Director of the Gross National Happiness Centre, Bhutan.

On 23rd February 2015 there was a round table on Music and Health chaired by Lord Berkeley of Knighton and attended by a wide range of experts in the field as well as several parliamentarians. There was a very stimulating discussion on the evidence base for the impact of music interventions on health and wellbeing including some of the latest research in neuroscience, the significant benefits of music for people with dementia and the challenges of sustaining the work in the current economic climate. On 6th July 2015 there was a round table on Arts and Dementia chaired by Baroness Greengross and Baroness Jolly. The roundtable was jointly hosted with the APPG on Dementia. The focus was on non-clinical community based programmes including work in care homes and the areas for discussion were: the evidence base; practitioners; and structures and policy. On 9th November 2015 there was a round table on the Arts and Palliative Care, Dying and Bereavement chaired by Baroness Finlay. The main areas of discussion covered: what is unique about the arts; training and management; and research and evidence. On 7th December 2015 there was a round table on the Arts and Post-traumatic Stress chaired by Lord West of Spithead. There were presentations by Professor Peter Kinderman, President-Elect of the British Psychological Society, and Professor Nigel Osborne. Organisations involved in the round table discussion were: Combat Stress, Combat Veteran Players, Danish Wounded Warriors, Farnham Maltings, Home Front, Military Wives Choirs Foundation, Re-Live, Rosie Kay Dance, Music Action International, Veterans in Practice. On 29th February 2016 there was a round table on Museums and Health which was chaired by Lord Lupton, Trustee of the British Museum. There was a short presentation by Esme Ward, Head of Learning and Engagement at the Whitworth and Manchester Museum, Jason Spruce, a stroke survivor, and Anne Kearton, an Occupational Therapist at Trafford Hospital, followed by a discussion with a number of participants. On Monday March 21st there was a round table on Arts and Health Policy and Devolution chaired by Baroness Morgan of Ely. A short presentation by Alan Higgins, Director of Public Health, Oldham Council, and Clive Parkinson, Director of Arts for Health at Manchester Metropolitan University, was followed by a discussion with representatives from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. On Monday April 25th there was a round table on  Arts, Health and Wellbeing and Commissioning chaired by Lord Bichard. Participants included commissioners from CCGs and Local Authorities, and arts providers. The edited transcript of the discussion will be available soon.

On Monday May 9th there was a round table on  Arts on Prescription chaired by Lord Howarth of Newport. Participants included service users, service providers and academics involved in arts on prescription and social prescribing programmes. The edited transcript of this discussion will be available soon.

On Monday May 23rd there was a round table on  Young People, Mental Health and the Arts chaired by Baroness Meacher. Participants included service users, service providers and academics involved in this area of arts and health. The edited transcript of the discussion will be available soon.

On Monday June 13th there was a round table on  Arts and Healthcare Environments chaired by Lord Crisp. Participants included service users, service providers and academics involved in this area of arts and health. The edited transcript of the discussion will be available soon. The round table was followed by an event at St Thomas’ Hospital jointly presented with Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and Creativity and Wellbeing Week to showcase the work of arts programmes in hospitals around the country.

On Monday 11th July there was a round table on the Arts and Public Health chaired by Baroness Young of Hornsey. Participants included service users, service providers and academics involved in this area of arts and health. The edited transcript of the discussion can be downloaded here.
